People living in rural Beijing are forced into the cities, many find employment opportunities. Rural land is owned by the government, so they can only change how it is used. Another major issue is China's unique system of house registration, known as the hukou system. Designed to keep people from moving to the cities and forming slums, the hukou is issued at birth, fixing Chinese as rural or urban residents and making their access to social services.
Rural residents have long been excluded from enjoying the same social services that urban people enjoy. The quality of life is generally lower than the city. |
Beijing is a crowded urban area. It is crowded due to popular demand of living there. It is the most expensive area of China and even a tiny apartment can cost a fortune. This is because the government will need more money off of civilians in order to make room for more living spaces.
There is even an underground city beneath Beijing. There is an estimated 1 million living there. Bomb shelters and storage basements are turned into living spaces. This is illegal, but some people do it because the cost is much lower than living above ground. The underground city contains communal kitchens and bathrooms. This is necessary because there is only enough room for a bed in the apartments. |
